The Daily Blog (May 18) - Claire

Hello, my name is Claire, and I am writing the blog for Tuesday, May 18, 2010. Today, like normal, we came into our classroom at 8:05, but then, instead of going straight into our math lesson, Malia (Kailani's mom) came and told us that we were going to play a sports trivia game with Mr. McMurray!

Game play:

1. Mr. McMurray would read the question aloud.
2. Mr. McMurray would choose one of the 5 choices. He would keep guessing until he got the answer right.
3. If he got the answer on his first try, he got to pick 4 students to reveal if they had one of the gift cards hidden inside students' desks. If he got the question correct on his second try, he picked 3 students, if he got it on his third try, he would pick 2 students, and so on.

It took Mr. McMurray 9 tries to get all 5 gift cards!

After that exciting game, we moved on to our morning math lesson. Our lesson was on finding the surface area of a prism.

After math, we went over to the science lab and had science with Mrs. Foy-Couche. We learned about the different parts of snails. (Don't worry, we did not dissect the snails!) We got to share a snail with our partner and name our snails. My snail's name was Jared Hazel Charles, but we called him Jared. He was 7 cm long, and traveled at 0.3 cm per second. He was dark in color, with a greenish-yellowish-whitish color on his bottom. He was very cute. When I held him (yes, I let him crawl on me) I could feel his muscles moving in a wave-like motion. He also tried to eat me with his radula (the nail file-like tongue/teeth that they use to eat). His radula tickles!

In the middle of science, we went to recess. Then, after science, we went back to our classroom and read more of our book, "The Grizzly Bear Family," out of our literature books. Afterwards, we read three poems, "Above Jackson Pond," "Raccoons on the Shore at Paradox Lake," and "A Thousand Geese," which are all by Joseph Bruchac. We discussed these poems, and then Mr. McMurray read to us about Alaskan sled dogs (Canadian dogs and Siberian huskies). After that we went to lunch. I had, like always, a cream cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread, a Capri Sun, a Pink Lady apple, and a pudding cup.

After lunch, we worked on our American Revolution posters. My partner and I are doing the Battle of Yorktown, which took place in October, 1781, and was an American victory.

Next, we watched a play called "Wheels" that was recorded. It is a special play, because Mr. McMurray is in it! He played a man named "Rock." The funny thing is he was in 5th grade when he was in it! His appearance and his voice have changed almost completely from then.
After that, it was time to go home.
