The Daily Blog (Oct 7) - Ethan

Today is a very exciting day at Proctor School, because today is the 4th Annual Walk-a-thon! And I’m fortunate to be your Roving Reporter on this special school event.

Since it’s a Wednesday, we started off with the regular morning assembly. The Student Council president, Molly, led the flag salute. Afterwards, the announcements regarding the Walk-a-thon details were made. We were all reminded that it is VERY IMPORTANT to be safe and to have fun. The Walk-a-thon shirt design was shown to everyone which was designed by a 3rd grader. The shirt looked awesome. Then the Proctor Pride Points were awarded. Surprisingly, from the 4th and 5th graders’ box, the awardees all came from our very own Room 16! Yahooo!

After the assembly, we all started to walk to our classroom. The first thing we did was to correct our Monday and Tuesday’s homework. Mr. McMurray told the class, “Let’s get some volunteers to show us what they did on their homework.” The class president, Sarah, picked names randomly from the sticks in the box and had those students got up and showed their homework. I got called, too.

Next, Mr. McMurray reminded the class about who was to leave at noon today and who was allowed to stay later for the Walk-a-thon. Then he started distributing the Walk-a-thon shirts to us. We also got our GREEN wristbands and we put them on right away. Afterwards we took our backpacks outside the classroom so we could easily get our lunches during lunch time. At 10:05, we all lined up for recess and headed to the upper playground.

After recess, it was time for the Walk-a-thon! By 10:30, everyone was almost ready and very excited to start walking. Before we went to Station #5, Mr. McMurray asked my mom to take a class picture of the students from Room 16.

And…WALK WE GO!!!

The first station for 5th graders was the Space Zone. There were characters there dressed up as Yoda and Princess Lea from Star Wars. Next we passed the Disco Zone. There was loud dance music playing in there. Then we reached the Hollywood Zone, complete with the “Hollywood” sign on a mountain. Finally we passed the Limbo Zone. Some students found this station thrilling as they go and do the limbo, while others walked by it so it won’t slow them down. For me, my favorite was the Space Zone.

At around 11:40, the Walk-a-thon chairperson announced to stop the walk for lunch. By that time, I had finished 23 laps! Then we took our lunch break. Some students went home after lunch, while other students continued to walk some more. I decided to stay until 1:00 and finished 7 more laps. I am proud to say that I walked a total of 30 laps which was the most I’ve done in my years at Proctor! Yay!!!

We had so much fun at the Walk-a-thon. The students followed the safety rules and were properly behaved. The teachers, parents and volunteers had a fabulous time at the field as well. I learned the importance of exercise and that walking is a good way to stay physically fit.

Too bad that this was my last walk-a-thon at Proctor!
