The day started out with another cold morning at Proctor Elementary School. We were all playing and having fun then…the bell rang; everybody froze. Next, the yard duty told us to “walk to the line” so we walked to our lines and waited for Mr. McMurray to pick us up, and take us down to our class.
After we walked into our classroom, we sat down and Mr. McMurray asked for conference permission slips and homework. One student was late. The class thought one person forgot his homework, but Mr. McMurray called the student’s parents and it was worked out, so the class was able to add five paperclips to our class paperclip chain!
After, we corrected our math homework for a half an hour on estimating with division to help the class really understand the concept.
For another half hour we worked on an exact division worksheet from our 3-and-1 Math Practice Workbook. Then, those students that finished early started our Daily Exercises.
The class started a new science lesson on air pressure; learned about altimeters; and that the air pressure pushing down on an average adult, if it were concentrated in the same spot, would be the same as the weight of seven SUV’s! After watching a Power Point presentation on this lesson, we went to science with Ms. Foy-Couche.
In science, Ms. Foy-Couche showed us many experiments. To name a few: there was wire coiled around an almost empty soda can filled with water, and she lit a flame underneath it and held it there for about 15 seconds. Then, she dropped the soda can mouth-first into a tub of water. The air inside of the soda can imploded.
Soon it was time for recess.
Once we got back to the lab, it was time for another experiment involving a painting drop cloth being filled up with cool air (hairdryer) first which made it expand like a giant pillow. The next time Ms. Foy-Couche blew it up with warm air, it blew up like a pillow, but it rose to the ceiling. This experiment showed us how hot air rises and cold air sinks. We wrote about what we saw, and recorded it on our lab track sheets. Surprisingly, science was over right then and there. Mr. McMurray was LATE to pick us up because he got the schedules mixed up.
After science, the class got our science notebooks and wrote a reflection on what we did and what we learned.
Finally, the main event what we’ve all been waiting for: LUNCH!!!!
Sadly, lunch was over too soon.
After lunch we did “DEAR” (Drop Everything And Read). While some students read, others were working on division with Mr. McMurray.
After this, the class split into Social Studies groups for the First Americans Project and we worked on our posters and presentations for tomorrow. Mr. McMurray explained that our projects are being graded on their neatness, and information on several areas, including: geography, food, tools and utensils, clothing, shelter and climate.
When we finished, Mr. McMurray gave the class homework: a problem-solving activity involving division (PS 26 the whole page); and for language arts, Sparky the Firedog worksheet, which involves putting a story cut into sentence strips into sequence.
Then we came to an end of another day at Proctor!
