Daily Blog: Mr. McMurray

This past Friday we completed Theme 1 - Finding A Way - in our Language Arts program. The culminating event of each theme this year is a special reader's theater piece. For our first reader's theater selection this year, we read a play called It Takes Talent! It's about a group of kids at a school who are encouraged to participate in a talent show by their principal, Mr. Herbert. One of the students, Deon, is a bit reluctant to participate but is coaxed into being the MC by Mr. Herbert. A series of mishaps takes place during the talent show which allows Deon to show off her talents and everyone "finds a way" to make the show a success in the end.

I split up the class into three separate casts and tasked them with acting out the show, bringing in props and costume ideas, and provided them with time to rehearse together on different occasions during the week. On Friday morning, instead of beginning the day with warm-ups, we rehearsed in front of each other and then took a vote on which cast we wanted to act out the show for our kindergarten buddy class.

The vote favored our first cast which featured Kailey as narrator, Anna as Deon, and a host of other boys and girls in supporting roles. Our kindergarten buddy class arrived at 11am and then it was time for lights, camera, action!

The props and costumes were fantastic. Several members of this cast really threw themselves into their roles and went over the top with their facial expressions and even added accents to their dialogue.

We had a wonderful time performing It Takes Talent! for our kindergarten buddies, and we've thoroughly reviewed Theme 1 for grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and reading comprehension. This week coming up the class will complete our first of two Theme Skills Tests to show what they have learned!
