This morning, the first thing we did was the Problem of the Day! The Problem of the Day was about Wendy planning imaginary vacations. Wendy was trying to figure out how much the total cost would be, for 23 students and 2 teachers @ $379.00 per person. The vacation would be expensive!
After that, we did Math Vocabulary. We learned about multiplying using a different method called the Distributive Property. For me it was sort of tricky but I got the hang of it, and so did the whole class. I thought it was fun!
Here is an example: If you have 6 x 19, you break it into two smaller problems, such as 10 x 6 = 60 and 6 x 9 = 54. You add the two partial products together - 54 + 60 = 114 - this is a long version of 6 x 9 = 114.
Next the class walked to the Science Lab with Mrs. Foy-Couche. In the Science Lab, Mrs. Foy-Couche gave the class a piece of paper and a pencil. The paper had a chart with a the thermometer and some boxes on it. Then Mrs. Foy-Couche handed out a psychrometer. A psychrometer is a science gadget that measures humidity in the air. A psychrometer has a handle with a thermometer at the end of it. I have copied a image below for you to see.
To use a psychrometer you grab the handle and you spin it around to get your humidity reading.
After we were finished learning about the psychrometer we looked at the clock and it was 10:30. Mrs. Foy-Couche told the class, “Line up for recess.” The class lined up and then went outside for recess.
Upon returning from recess, we completed our experiment with our psychrometer. We used the psychrometer inside, outside, and then in the shade. We wrote down all of the humidity readings from the different places. It was really cool!
Next, Mr. McMurray met us at the science lab and we walked to our classroom. It was really hot outside. We wrote about our science lesson. We wrote in our notebooks for about 15 minutes.
When we finished writing about science we joined the Earthquake Terror groups. Each group had a different job to do for their presentation. For example, one group worked on drawing maps of the world to show where major earthquakes happened. Another group spent time doing research using computers and books.
Finally, it was time for Lunch. Mmmmmm! The fourth and fifth grade classes ate lunch in the cafeteria and outside. Then the students ran up to the blacktop for recess. Some kids ran to play basketball while others played kickball.
After recess, Mr. McMurray met us on the black top and we walked back to the classroom. After we sat down, we read our silent reading books for about 15 minutes. It was nice to read quietly, in our cool classroom. Some of the books that are being read are Because of Winn-Dixie, Homeward Bound, and Harry Potter.
The last part of our day was when Mr. McMurray handed out important information. I was so curious about what it was. Then we packed up our bags and left the classroom. As we left Mr. McMurray said, “See you tomorrow!”
It was an awesome day today in Room 16!
