The Daily Blog (Sept 17) - G'ana

Morning Recess.......fun until the bell rang!!

Mr. McMurray came and got us from the upper field and walked us back to the classroom.

Then he took roll and marked Elliott absent. Mr. McMurray told us that today would be our very first fifth grade visit to the Mac Lab. We were split into two groups and my group went to the Lab first. When we arrived we saw Mr. Silzle talking to Mrs. Dunn.

Mrs. Dunn took roll and sang our names to us. She stumbled on Yanatzeli's name and we all laughed. She showed us a picture of herself in cartoon form for the Code of Conduct and we all had a good chuckle. Computer Lab groups were announced and we voted whether we wanted to pick our seats or have assigned seats. Of course, picking our seats won by a landslide . I was sitting next to Bella and Claire. All of the groups were either all boys or all girls.

I was playing a game called Math Munchers on the computer while Bella played Crazy Machines.

"AAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!" screamed a little boy in the library. Bella and I both looked at each other, startled.

We wrapped up learning games by pressing "Apple + Q" and were dismissed by Mrs. Dunn from the Mac Lab.

We walked back to Room 16 and the second group left.

Mr. McMurray told us that we were going to watch a rap video on multiplication tables. At first it seemed a bit odd, but by the time it got to the middle we were all rapping along with it.

We did our Daily Exercises until the second group returned.

RRRRIIINNNNGGGG!! Mr.McMurray, wearing his yellow, striped shirt, dismissed us to recess.

Sarah and I got the yellow ball and met with some friends to play Four Square and talk on a beautiful, sunny day.

RRRRIIINNNNGGGG!! We said,"Hasta la vista!" to our friends as our freedom was coming to an end.

We lined up and waited for the man in the yellow, striped shirt to come and get us.

When we were sitting back at our desks, Mr. McMurray told us that we would be in groups for the Earthquake Terror story project. The groups were each given an assignment and we then had to pick jobs within the groups. Our group was given a Major Earthquake Map of previous earthquakes from 1909 to 2009. Sarah, Julia and I wrote out bulletins when Brandon gave us information about: where the earthquakes had taken place; how many people died; the year they happened; and how long each earthquake lasted. Griffin was searching the websites Mr. McMurray had given us. All of the groups were scattered around the classroom and outside. Mr. McMurray called us in to get our lunches and then walked us to the cafeteria for lunch at 12:30pm.

My friends and I played Four Square again after we ate.

DINGDONGDINGDONG!! We lined up and waited for the man in the yellow, striped shirt to pick us up.

Back in class, Mr. McMurray had Griffin pull sticks out of the glass jar because he is the president this week. Whoever was picked out of the jar had to speak about their group work and how they thought it went. They discussed the 'pros' and 'cons' of the experience.

After everyone shared out about the group work, Justin was asked to turn off the lights and Mr. McMurray showed us Brenda's blog and part of Leo's blog on the overhead projector.

He then put us to work on our Robot essays to see what writing tools we have and our overall writing ability.

Drop Everything And Read or DEAR, as Mr. McMurray calls it, is what we did next for 20 minutes or so.

For our final activity of the day, were put to work in our language arts notebooks about subjects and predicates, as well as the simple and complete subject, and simple and complete predicate. It was a fun activity.

As the day was almost over, we wrote down our homework assignments. It included Daily Exercises with the whole packet completed by tomorrow, and a science worksheet on our vocabulary words from chapter 5.

Right before the last bell of the day rang, Mr. McMurray gave several students a paper folded up and said that it was bad news. I was one of those students. When I opened the paper, I found out that I was a Noon League Football team captain. Ondray, Griffin, Kannen, myself, and a few others started jumping up and down and the classroom shook.

We all said goodbye to the man in the yellow, striped shirt and headed home for the day.
