Daily Blog: Mr. McMurray

I apologize for the delay in updating the blog. My family has spent the better half of this past week moving, and so we have been without an internet connection. I think we may be back in business.

At the moment, the class is writing a newspaper story this week and working on those reporting skills as we read a biography on The Daring Nellie Bly who traveled the world in seventy-two days. With a newspaper story in their resume, I believe I may have several potential roving reporters in the coming weeks.

I am happy to announce that we earned over $560 in book and software orders from Scholastic this month. That's the good news. The not-so-good news is that Scholastic adjusted their Bonus Point catalog for pricing and while we now have 24,000+ in our account, the iPad2 is 36,000 instead of 19,990 like last year. So that is a bummer. I will have to see what to do at this point. Maybe just hold onto what we have for now. I'm not sure.

The class has earned 5 straight AWESOME tickets in PE and so last week three students were able to have lunch with me and play a game of Scrabble on the iPad. The big winner, as you can see, was MIRA!

On Monday, we were pleased to hear from Ruth who brought in her dulcimer to share with the class. She gave us some background information on the dulcimer and played a few tunes on it before taking a few questions and quizzing the class on her presentation. It was a very unique experience and we were so excited that she would share with us. A dulcimer looks something like this!

This week we are completing a chapter in math on multiplication. Tomorrow morning is our chapter test. We will then focus on division through next week.

In Science we're wrapping up our unit, Water on Earth, with a test this Friday online. All students have a study guide that we've reviewed in class. Questions focus on the ocean, clouds, the water cycle, and types of precipitation, as well as fresh water sources in California and ways to recycle water. Study up!

The class completed mobiles of the American Indian cultural regions with a Clock Partner in Social Studies this past week. Each section of the mobile details the geography, climate, tools, and technology of American Indians from the Pacific Northwest, Great Plains, Eastern Woodlands, and Desert Southwest. Pictures to come!

Tuesday was Picture Day! Everyone looked fabulous and we were in and out of the Arts Center in just under 15 minutes.

Finally, we congratulate ANNA on winning the election to become our new Student Council President for the Fall Term. She did a wonderful job leading the flag salute this morning before the entire school!
