Daily Blog: Mr. McMurray

A few students (Ester, Kevin, Gabriel, and Bobby) showed up at the classroom before school and volunteered to help straighten up the room, sweep the floor, and sort through the work filed in our mailboxes from yesterday before the tardy bell rang. I promised each student a Proctor Pride Point for their hard work and for taking the initiative to help out. It made a big difference to me!

Today was the first schoolwide flag salute assembly led by Ms. Garcia on the lower playground. We did the Pledge of Allegiance and listened to all the announcements including an update on the Scholastic book fair and Box Tops for Education. Then it was time to head to class.

When the students arrived at the classroom they took out their warms-ups and got to work. We reviewed the features of a political map and compass rose and then it was time to turn in last night's homework. A few students were missing an item and so a note was made of that and they'll plan on turning it in tomorrow to the "Better Late Than Never" file.

Once homework was collected and warm-ups corrected we jumped right into this morning's math lesson on reading and writing whole numbers through the billions place. I needed the help of several volunteers to come forward and hold a sign with the name of a place value on it all the way from the Ones place to the Hundred Billions place. Bailey came forward and held the sign that read "PERIOD" which represents a group of three numbers separated by a comma, such as the thousands, millions, and billions place.

We then learned about standard form, expanded form, and short word form and the different ways to write numbers. I encouraged students to take notes in their math notebooks before we were off to complete a page from our math packet independently. Some questions popped up about how to complete a problem or two, and to clarify again the difference between the value and the place value of a digit. We corrected the 11 items I assigned and then prepared for recess.

After recess I introduced a brand new book that I'm going to be reading to the class entitled I.Q. It's a modern-day mystery and I read aloud through the first section of the book, which focuses on step-siblings, Q (for Quest) and Angela.

Shortly after the read aloud was finished, we transitioned to the Entry-Level Assessment for our new language arts series. I decided to have the class begin with the writing section of the test. It's a persuasive writing piece. While the kids were off brainstorming and writing their essay, I was pulling students to a side table to complete the reading fluency section of the test.

By 11:45, we needed to stop what we were doing in order to prepare for dismissal at noon. I assigned the homework and made sure students were writing it down in their binder reminder. I had students put their language arts tests into their black binders for tomorrow and we were prepared for the bell signaling the end of the day.

At noon, the boys and girls of Room 16 exited the classroom after a busy morning of work!
